Why Natural Products ?


During my third pregnancy, I was diagnosed with Lupus.  My first two pregnancies  ended in stillbirth which was caused by Lupus.  Needless to say, I was anxious about my third pregnancy.

I had the best doctor in the world.  He gave me a very detailed plan and I followed it to the letter.  He warned that if we both survived the pregnancy, it could be a disaster for me.  And it was.  But by a miracle my daughter was born alive and well.   

For four years after I'd given birth, my health was seriously challenged.  I was on so many medications, and I had six doctors at one time trying to figure out some plan of action.   But I was only getting worse...
 
I honestly believe the cure for Lupus is worse than the disease.  I started going through bouts of disability and not being able to work for months at a time.  I'd developed a condition called avascular necrosis, which was bone death, in my left hip and could barely walk.

Not to mention, I was on a nebulizer for asthma 4 times a day.  So I could not walk nor breathe.  I won't even bore you with all of the other Lupus related ailments.   I was on so many medications and all I was doing was getting sicker and sicker. 

During this time, I began researching natural healing methods, and I believe to this day God directed me to an  acupuncturist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine  who literally changed my life.

It was a combination of Chinese herbs,  acupuncture and major lifestyle changes.  I had to get rid of everything and everyone in my life that caused me significant stress.  I also had to eat well, rest, drink water and exercise.  (Exercise came much later.)

Doctors still say there is no cure for Lupus.  And doctors still stay there is no cure for avascular necrosis without a hip replacement.  The doctors call it being in remission. I don't care what you call it.  But 15 years later.   Here I am.  No medications.  And I am healthy.   That's my definition of cured. 

  So if nature can fix this problem, imagine what she can do for skin problems. 


Going through such a powerful,  personal natural healing experience gave me  such respect and reliance on natural laws and herbs.

That is what led me to look  for natural solutions to skin problems and that is why I created Natural Skin Junkie.   

But more importantly, I have respect for what goes in my body as well as what goes on my body as well as yours.

Why I Became an Esthetician 

The funny thing is .....I was more passionate about being a Licensed Makeup Artist than I was about being an Esthetician.   I'd spent years in the legal field working as a Paralegal in a highly stressful environment, and all I wanted was to have the least stressful career I could have. 

I was a Paralegal by day and a beauty consultant by night. Working with companies like Mary Kay,  Artistry, BeautiControl  and I loved making women beautiful.  

And what could more fun than helping women realize their beauty potential.  So I went to school to become a Licensed Makeup Artist.  

One day in class ... we are studying skin biology and skin physiology.  And instead of being bored out of my mind, I was super excited !!!  It was the most interesting subject in the world because before that moment I had no idea that we have the power to cause changes in our skin.   It's simply a matter of understanding how our skin works and working with our skin instead of against it. 

And to this day, I am as excited about how, what and why our skin works the way it does.   

That led me to expand on my basic knowledge and get education from highly qualified and respected skin authorities and biochemists. 

I also figured out a way to solve my own highly sensitive skin issue that kept me at the dermatologist.  

How I Became Missouri's First Black Esthetician

Before 1996 in Missouri, if you wanted to be a facialist (that is what Estheticians were called back then ), you had to be a licensed cosmetologists with an emphasis on hair and very little on skin.   

I have no talents as a hairdresser.  My only interest is skin. 

So every year for at least 10 years, I called the State Board of Cosmetology to find out if there is a program dedicated just to skin (esthetics). 
Every year, I was told No.  

Then finally, one day I called and the answer was yes!  I enrolled in the first class in 1996, and I passed by State Boards in 1997. 
 
And I was the only Black person in the class so technically that's how I became the first Black Esthetician in Missouri.
